Ephmr est un site consacré aux publications et initiatives artistiques liées à l’édition. A l’occasion des deux ans du site, nous inaugurons un nouveau système de cycles dédiés à des thématiques particulières. S’éloignant de la simple fonction d’archivage d’une collection, nous souhaitons avec cette nouvelle version proposer un contenu dynamique, engagé et parfois inédit. Le premier cycle commençant aujourd’hui sera consacré aux portfolios d’artistes. Plus particulièrement à leur pendant numérique, le pdf ou portable document format. Ce cycle intitulé « Artist’s work files » est le fruit d’une réflexion commune portée par Sébastien Remy et Cyril Verde. Elle s’étalera sur quatre mois durant lesquels nous diffuserons un nouveau pdf d’artiste chaque semaine.

Ephmr is a website dedicated to prints and artistic initiatives related to publication. For the website’s second year, we are inaugurating a new system of cycles, each devoted to particular themes. Drifting away from the simple collection and archiving function, we would like to propose, in this new version, a more dynamic content, undertaking further responsibilities in the new art scene. This first cycle starting today will be dedicated to artist portfolios. Particularily their digital version, the pdf or portable document format. This cycle, entitled « Artist’s work files », is the product of collective thought by Sébastien Remy and Cyril Verde. It will cover four months during which a new portfolio will be introduced each week.

En 2002, les éditions JRP publiaient Prospectus 1988-2002, une collection de descriptions de ses projets par Ben Kinmont. Le livre raconte les oeuvres réalisées dans la rue, dans les maisons de particuliers  et dans différents musées et galeries. Cette première édition est épuisée depuis plusieurs années.

En mars prochain, une exposition rétrospective des oeuvres de Ben Kinmont, intitulée également Prospectus, ouvrira au Kunstverein d’Amsterdam, puis voyagera à Paris, New York et San Francisco. En conjonction avec ces expositions, une nouvelle édition augmentée va paraître.

Imprimée par Patrick Reagh, cette nouvelle édition de Prospectus est augmentée des nouveaux projets depuis 2000 ainsi que d’autres que Ben Kinmont avait involontairement omis. La première édition était imprimée en offset en Suisse avec une photographie couleur signée en tirage de tête. Dans l’édition à venir le texte est imprimé en typographie, avec des caractères en plomb. Quant aux illustrations, elles sont imprimées d’une seconde couleur avec des plaques polymères, une technique plus proche de la gravure sur bois que de l’offset. Ces nouvelles illustrations sont des fac-similés de documents directement tirés des archives du projet et deviennent ainsi une extension des archives elles-mêmes. L’édition courante de cette nouvelle édition sera disponible au printemps, diffusée par JRP-Ringier.

Dans le tirage de tête, chaque livre est numéroté, signé et livré avec une description de projet formée par les caractères au plomb. Ce sont les matrices avec lesquelles le livre est imprimé (voir l’illustration ci-dessus). De la sorte, chaque exemplaire du tirage de tête est unique. Le nombre de tirages de tête est identique au nombre de projets dans le livre : quarante-deux.

In 2002, JRP Editions published Prospectus 1988-2002, a collection of project descriptions written by Ben Kinmont. The book tells the story of works conducted out on the street, in people’s homes, and in various museums and galleries. The first edition has been out of print for the past several years.

Next March, a survey show of Kinmont’s work, also entitled Prospectus, will open at the Kunstverein Amsterdam and then travel to Paris, New York, and San Francisco. To correspond with the show, a new, expanded edition of the book is being issued.

Printed by Patrick Reagh, this edition of Prospectus differs from the first in that it has been expanded to include new projects since 2000 as well as a few others that Kinmont had unintentionally omitted. The first edition was printed offset in Switzerland with a signature of photographic reproductions. In the current edition, the text is printed letterpress with individual pieces of lead type and the signature of illustrations, while also printed letterpress, is printed in a second color using polymer plates, a more recent printing technology more akin to woodblock printing than offset. These new illustrations are facsimiles of documents taken directly from the project archives and effectively become an extension of the archives themselves. The regular issue of the new edition will be available in the spring and be distributed by JRP-Ringier.

In the artist’s edition, each book is numbered and signed and comes with one project description cast in lead type. These are the actual pages from which the book was printed (see the illustration above). As such, each copy of the artist’s edition is unique. The size of the edition for sale is equal to the number of projects in the book: forty-two.
